C.H.A.N.G.E. For 2011

As we approach the beginning of a new year, it is time to be proactive and to reflect on the passing year, honestly accessing what we did right this year and what we would like to change in the coming year to ensure health and fitness success. The only thing constant in life is change; therefore, using the following acronym, "C.H.A.N.G.E." may provide you with a simple method of staying on track when setting your health and fitness course for 2011. As always, prior to beginning any exercise program, please consult your physician.

  • C - Create: a fitness plan that you will work for the short and long term by developing specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely goals and objectives (i.e. refer to the "Goals-the heart and soul of motivation" column two weeks ago for detailed goal-setting techniques). Consult your qualified/certified health and fitness professional for further consultation and guidance when creating the plan.
  • H - Healthy: choices both in what you choose to eat (i.e. the little things do matter and the devil, as they say, is in the details) and staying on track with your fitness plan. Since you have created a personal health and fitness plan, now WORK that plan by making healthy choices throughout the year. One healthy choice leads to another!
  • A - Achieve: your fitness goals by focusing on a marathon, not a sprint, philosophy. Sustained, long term weight loss, optimal fitness levels and solid nutritional programs take time to achieve. Set yourself up to achieve your stated goals by being patient, knowing that most things worthwhile take time.
  • N - Nurture: yourself by taking positive "you" time throughout each week in 2011. In addition to your exercise program, which is an incredibly effective method of stress reduction, meditate, take cat naps, be with family and friends, and stop and smell the roses. If you perceive your life to be balanced, even when curve balls are sent your way, you will tend to stay on track in every aspect of your life, including health and fitness. Contribute to others as well as nothing feeds the soul like helping those in need.
  • G - Generate: enthusiasm for your exercise and nutritional programs by getting excited about training, consistently tracking your progress with exercise and nutritional journals/logs and sustaining a healthy lifestyle throughout the year. Vary your workouts and food choices to keep it fun and interesting and you will be more likely to stick with the plan.
  • E - Expect: success. Start off the plan the way you want to finish it. Visualize yourself succeeding, how you want to feel and look. The power of visualization and imagery are well researched and proven in sport's psychology which is why elite athletes utilize the "head edge" approach to improving their performance. See it, hear it, feel it, taste it and then actually experience the amazing results.

This moment is the time to make 2011 the year of positive health and fitness C.H.A.N.G.E.!
